John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890) was an American explorer, military officer, and politician. He was a US Senator from California, and in 1856 was the first Republican nominee for President of the United States. A native of Georgia, Frémont acquired male protectors after his father's death, and became proficient in mathematics, science, and surveying. Came to Princeton, Illinois in 1838 as minister of the Congregational Church and strong abolitionist. His home there was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He was elected to the state legislature in 1854 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, where he served five terms. He was the brother of slain abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy.
